Abstract

Literacy is arguably the most crucial aspect of a student’s education. This WestEd Perspectives brief explores the need for integrated and intentional planning in literacy policymaking to better support students with disabilities. Specifically, the brief summarizes recent literacy legislation related to both general education and special education systems; provides six considerations for states to keep in mind when implementing literacy laws that support students with disabilities; and shares a list of resources for states to use in developing and implementing literacy policies.
